Defense of the Ancients（简称DotA）是《魔兽争霸III》中的一张角色扮演（RPG）类型的自定义地图。

DotA地图是由作者Eul创作的源自星际的一个RPG对战地图，但之后该地图停止了更新。之后，有不同的作者继续更新DotA地图，他们各自添加了不同的游戏元素。

随后有人制作了包含各个DotA版本的英雄的地图：Defense of the Ancients: Allstars（简称DotA Allstars），如今的DotA一般指Defense of the Ancients: Allstars。现在DotA Allstars是最流行的DotA类地图，也是世界上最流行的魔兽RPG地图。DotA Allstars是一個重視对抗的角色扮演游戏。遊戲目標是在队友的合作下，摧毁对方的基地；或是有一方全部退出游戏。游戏中也有由人工智能所控制的单位。

这个地图使用《魔兽争霸III》地图编辑器开发。有许多人参与这张地图的开发，现在主要的开发者的昵称是“IceFrog”。《魔兽争霸III》地图编辑器的自定义地图不断改变《魔兽争霸III》的游戏性质，例如在地图裡面加入一些角色扮演游戏的要素，使制作出的地图具有与原有的即时战略游戏不同的要素。

在史蒂夫·费克停止开发后，IceFrog从版本6.02开始接手，直到现在他仍在为地图工作。他添加了新功能、英雄和修正，每一个版本都附带更新记录。IceFrog 拒绝接受采访；只有通过他使用电子邮件将地图发送至getdota.com和地图载入画面中的昵称才能看到IceFrog是地图的作者。现在 Icefrog通过个人Blog与玩家们交流、回答玩家们对他和对游戏的问题。他也会报道一些即将发布的地图版本，包括新的英雄和物品。Icefrog较易接纳他人意见，许多新的东西就是经过讨论而创作出的。

Defense of the Ancients (DotA) is a custom scenario for the real-time strategy video game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, based on the “Aeon of Strife” map for StarCraft. The objective of the scenario is for each team to destroy the opponents’ Ancients, heavily guarded structures at opposing corners of the map. Players use powerful units known as heroes, and are assisted by allied heroes and AI-controlled fighters called “creeps”. As in role-playing games, players level up their hero and use gold to buy equipment during the mission.

The scenario was developed with the “World Editor” of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, and was updated upon the release of the expansion, The Frozen Throne. There have been many variations of the original concept; the most popular is DotA Allstars, which has been maintained by several authors during development. The current developer is known by his pseudonym as “IceFrog”, and has been developing the game since 2005.

Since its release, Allstars has become a feature at several worldwide tournaments, including Blizzard Entertainment’s BlizzCon and the Asian World Cyber Games, as well as the Cyberathlete Amateur and CyberEvolution leagues; Gamasutra declared that DotA was perhaps the most popular “free, non-supported game mod in the world”.
